Miss Dee Licious
gets a canvas makeover!
Back in March 2020, before lockdown, I had one of the MOST fun days in my studio ever! My drag queen friend Kévin d’Odémont aka Miss Dee Licious came to SGHQ for a photoshoot for a portrait I planned to paint of her. My photographer, Will Ferguson, brought all his kit and once the make up and wig were in place (which took over 2 hours!) we shot away & arrived on a photo that just screamed out ‘Paint me!!’. The initial plan was for me to create a portrait to enter into the BP Portrait Awards, sadly the competition isn’t taking place again until 2023 while the National Portrait gallery has a refurb…oh dear! I last entered in 2006 (didn’t get in), but had hoped Miss Dee Licious would be bold and bright enough to try for next year. Still, she was an utter joy to paint, so let’s just wait and see where her journey takes her…
What is for sure, is that we plan to make the most of her! Starting with a release of mini prints . This signed giclee mini print is very special as £5 of every one sold will go to the brilliant charity Just Like Us. The charity was founded for a simple reason: growing up LGBT+ is still unacceptably tough. ‘Our mission is to empower young people to champion LGBT+ equality’.
Just Like Us want all young people to know that being LGBT+ is something to be celebrated. They run programmes within companies and schools to educate and combat lesbophobia, homophobia, biphobia and transphobia. This important work stands for everything Miss Dee represents, equality and the basic right to be yourself.
The Miss Dee Licious print is available from my shop now and we have also sold a large one off proof for £500, every penny of which went to Just Like Us too.
